The tortoise always beats the hare. Compared to the inefficient lax pace of the hare, the tortoise takes it slow and steady.  Rather than the healthy route, a lot of seniors at AC Reynolds High School make like the hare and catch a case of senioritis. Senioritis is the health term used when high school seniors begin to digress from their hard working habits and settle into a more carefree mindset. The side effects often include plummeting grades, self pity, Mount Olympus levels of procrastination, and denial. Senior Malik Long says that the self loathing inflammatory disease has gotten the best of him this year. “I had it bad, but eventually had to snap out of it to get my senior project done,”  he stated. For a lot of students, the senior project was the stick poking the wound. But for some students, like Tyrik Carter, senioritis took no effect. “Well it didn’t really affect me because I’m usually a hard worker and know what I need to get done so I just do it,” he claimed with ease. It seems as though Tyrik has the right idea.

The students are not the only ones affected; teachers are the ones left to nurse the premature graduates back to life. When they lack the physical endurance, teachers like Coach Honie have to remind the students that it is all in their heads. “That’s the misconception. They believe since it’s the end of the year, there’s no more work. When in reality it’s the opposite; this is the most crucial time that they need to push through,” said Honea.

So what would be the cure to this unfortunate disease of the lazy? “ One way to avoid being in this position is to start early. Do your project hours over the summer so you won’t have to stress over applying for college and your classes all at once. No one ever regretted getting something done early, but everyone regrets not,” Honea advised.
